Garage Door Off Track? Do This (And Don't Do This)

First: Stop Using the Door Immediately

Do not attempt to open or close a door that's jumped the track. The door could collapse, crush anything underneath it, or damage the opener beyond repair. Disconnect the opener by pulling the red emergency release cord and leave the door where it is.

Why Doors Go Off Track

• Broken cable: The most common cause. Cables snap suddenly and the door drops unevenly, forcing a roller out of the track.
• Impact damage: Backing into the door with a vehicle, even a light bump, can dent a panel and push rollers off the track.
• Worn or broken rollers: Old rollers crack and the stem bends, allowing the wheel to slip out of the track.

• Loose track hardware: Track mounting bolts that have vibrated loose over years can let the track sag away from the rollers.
