Before you call for service, run through this quick checklist. Many opener problems have simple fixes you can do yourself in under five minutes.
Is the opener plugged in? It sounds obvious, but openers can be accidentally unplugged, especially if something brushed against the cord in the garage. Also check your circuit breaker — openers share circuits with lights and can trip a breaker.
Dead batteries are the #1 cause of "my opener stopped working" calls. Replace both batteries in your remote (usually CR2032 or AA) and try again. If you have a keypad, replace those batteries too.
Your opener has two small sensors at the bottom of each door track — one sends a beam, the other receives it. If anything blocks the beam (a cobweb, a leaf, a box pushed too close), the door won't close. Look for a blinking or amber light on one of the sensors. Clean the lenses with a dry cloth and make sure they're aligned.
If the remote doesn't work but the wall button does, the issue is with the remote or its signal — not the opener itself. Try reprogramming the remote or replacing it.
There's a red rope hanging from the trolley on your opener rail. If someone pulled it (common during a power outage), the door is disconnected from the opener. Pull the cord toward the door to re-engage the carriage.
Does the opener hum but the door doesn't move? That usually means a stripped gear or broken drive belt/chain — parts that need professional replacement. Does it click once and stop? Could be a thermal overload — let it rest 15 minutes and try again.
If none of the above fixes it, it's time to call in a pro. We diagnose opener problems the same day and carry parts for all major brands — LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, and Craftsman.
