Garage Door Safety Tips Every Homeowner Should Know

Schaumburg Garage Door Pro | Schaumburg, IL

Garage doors are the largest moving mechanical object in most homes. Each year, thousands of Americans are injured in garage door accidents — most of which are preventable. Here's what every homeowner should know.

Test the Auto-Reverse Monthly

Place a 2x4 flat on the ground under the center of the door. Press the close button. The door should reverse immediately upon contact with the board. If it doesn't, adjust the opener's sensitivity or call for service. This feature has been required on all new openers since 1993 — if yours doesn't have it, it's time for a new opener.

Test the Photo Eye Sensors Monthly

While the door is closing, wave your hand through the sensor beam. The door should immediately reverse. Keep sensor lenses clean — a dirty lens can fail intermittently and is easy to miss.

Keep Children Away from the Controls

Children should never play with garage door remotes or wall buttons. Teach children that the garage door is not a toy, and don't let them run under a moving door. Mount wall buttons at least 5 feet from the ground, out of young children's reach.

Don't Leave the Door Partially Open

A door at mid-height can fall unexpectedly if a spring breaks. When the door is in use, run it fully up or fully down — don't leave it halfway. Springs and cables are under significant tension at mid-travel.

Keep Fingers Away from Sections

The hinged sections of a moving garage door are a serious pinch hazard. Never reach into the section gaps while the door is moving. Modern doors have pinch-resistant designs, but older ones do not.

Never Enter a Garage with the Car Running

Carbon monoxide from a running vehicle can fill a garage in minutes — even with the door open. Always pull all the way in, turn off the engine immediately, and leave. CO poisoning in attached garages is a genuine risk.

Have the Door Inspected Every 2 Years

A professional safety inspection catches worn springs, fraying cables, and misaligned sensors before they become emergencies. Our $75–$150 tune-up includes a full safety check on every component.
