Schaumburg Garage Door Pro | Schaumburg, IL
Illinois winters are serious. Temperatures regularly drop below zero in the Schaumburg area, and that cold takes a real toll on garage doors and openers. Here's how to prep before the cold hits.
Standard lubricants thicken in sub-zero temperatures, making rollers sluggish and straining the opener. Before November, apply a lithium-based lubricant rated for cold weather to all rollers, hinges, springs, and the opener drive. Avoid WD-40 — it's a solvent, not a lubricant, and it washes away real lubrication.
The rubber seal along the bottom of your door is your first line of defense against cold air, water, and pests. Check it for cracks, gaps, or sections that no longer compress flat against the ground. A worn bottom seal can add meaningful cold air infiltration to an attached garage. Replacement seals run $20–$60 in parts.
Don't overlook the vinyl weatherstripping along the sides and top of the door frame. Gaps here let in cold air and moisture. Replace any sections that are cracked or pulling away from the frame.
In wet, freezing conditions, the bottom seal can freeze solid to the garage floor — and when you try to open the door, you'll tear the seal or damage the opener. Prevention: after washing or in wet conditions, sprinkle salt along the seal line or apply a silicone-based spray to reduce adhesion.
On the first genuinely cold day of the season, watch how your opener performs. Sluggish movement in cold weather can indicate worn springs or a struggling motor. Catching it in November is much better than dealing with a failure in January.
Don't let snow pile up against the bottom of the door. Heavy snow buildup can damage the bottom seal and add enough weight to strain the opener. Clear snow from the driveway apron after each storm.
Our fall tune-up includes cold-weather lubrication, seal inspection, spring tension check, and opener calibration — everything you need to get through the winter without surprises.
